Put It In Writing

Posted by:

This October will mark CrossFit Central’s 6th anniversary. Nearly six years ago Jeremy Thiel and Carey Kepler took the initial steps to make their dream a reality. Through their passion and intention they attracted like-minded people as key leaders in their community and were able to grow to 36+ coaches and staff members. In those six years they have laid out company goals, spoken of mantras and missions, and laid out what we believe in as a company. Words like excellence, integrity, empowerment, leadership and results are discussed on a weekly – if not daily basis.

«  Intentions

Central’s mission from day 1 has been to build a fit community through CrossFit. The team’s intention has always been to help spread the revolution that is Crossfit, impact as many people’s lives as possible and support the CrossFit community at large. Although these ideas and missions are common knowledge for the Crossfit Central team, we had never written out and very, very clearly defined CrossFit Central’s internal mission, core values and objectives.

«  But. What was the need?

We talked about it at every staff meeting, discussed it in most meetings and reminded each other through our actions and leadership. New coaches were taught our values as they developed their skill sets in Central’s mentorship program.

We know how important goal setting is if you want to get results. We’ve seen how creating a vision board and enlisting accountability partners can transform a person’s life and make their dreams a reality. And we know that in order to achieve your goals you have to define them, lay out the steps to accomplish them, and take action. So why wouldn’t you do this for your company and your internal team?

Put it in writing.

Forces you to clearly define and outline your thoughts.

If your core values are integrity and fun – what does that mean? Define it. It will give your team a standard of excellence to adhere to.

Frees RAM in your mind and your team’s mind

Whether you realize it or not, we are constantly storing thoughts, ideas, memories, facts and visual images by the second. With something as important as your company’s objectives, goals and core values you have to get it on paper. Not only will it free up space in your mind and your core leader’s minds, but it will ensure that your team is “on the same page”.

Clearly define and strengthen your culture

You may have a great culture inside your company. We do too. Our team lives and breathes our culture, but putting it in writing only strengthens this mindset and leadership.

Question: Does your team know your internal core values, objectives and mission? Is it in writing? How do you constantly engage your community in these objectives and core values?
